Jordan Hoffart Interview Part 3
NS: So how is your ankle doing?
JH: I broke it 2 times last year and it is very hard now to front feeble, for my foot does not flex in the way that it should be able to now, but other than that I feel okay.
NS: I know how you feel. After I hit my skull in that car wreck and lost my balance from the inner ear injury that took my hearing in my right ear away, I cannot lean back very well. So my style went all to hell, but that is another story. Do you fear Death Wish being drafted by Zero?
JH: No, I have seen kids get lured in by bigger brands, etc. But I feel he is dedicated to us.
NS: So what other stuff is in the mix?
JH: 411 part. Hint, nudge, Ortiz.
NS: You had a ton of down time when you had your ankle on the fritz. What did you do when you were laid up?
JH: I got involved with the biz side of things. Graphics concepts, ad layouts, watched tons of "sponsor me" tapes.
NS: So you are like Cab. He does mad artwork as well over there, right?
JH: No, he is an artist. I am more just like clip art and deciding what looks rad and where.
NS: Why is it so hard for even riders to get ceramics?
JH: Well, George makes his bearings strategically placed, so you need a level 5 warlock status to obtain them. I mean I had them before and trust me, they're good.
NS: Does Cab even get ceramics?
JH: Oh Cab can do whatever he wants for sure. I bet if he wanted he could just get anything he needed in any amount.
NS: Why do so many kids leave and not follow the tradition of loyalty?
JH: Kern Cables left. There was a few but they all went to flip. You know, it is sad, we are trying to stop being this stepping stone of a company. It is hard though, like what kid is going to say no to Geoff Rolley? Figgy went to B. house and it is crazy cause Deville takes these kids under his wing, helps them blow up then they just leave as soon as somebody takes notice and offers them a deal.
NS: Why do you think it is so easy for kids to leave and to jump ship, etc?
JH: We have never been about contracts. Like a contract to a 13 year old kid should be illegal, to give a 13 year old a contract you know? Like we just want our am's to be down for the brand and down for skating for fun.
NS: What has skating taught you?
JH: Loyalty. I mean nobody wants to see a guy jump around all the time to sponsors. Do you hustle because of your love for skating or is it for the money or the hot sponsors or to be famous? That is what I would like to ask people, you know? It is all wood. I skate for the love and that is the bottom line. Most of it is made in the same place, china.
NS: How did you get such a level head on your shoulders? most people at your age are more shallow than a toilet. I think it is rad that you see skating for what it really is.
JH: My mom and dad and friends and myself. Growing up I got involved in large amounts of money when I was acting.
NS: Is that how you paid for the loft?
JH: Fully man, skating did not cover it. Life situations, it does get to your head, a ton of money is a slippery slope. But in realty you are nothing. When you step back, you made a quarter of what a lawyer makes in a year and the world will not benefit from this dumb movie you are in. In fact it will ruin it with boxes of plastic and crap all over the place. Why have a big ego for just skating or acting? You are not benefiting Society.
NS: Gnar car. How did it come up?
JH: Jordan got a contract for 6 shows of American Misfits and gnar car stuck and we went out and did it. It was fun lighting up stuff and filming.
NS: How the fuck did Vancouver, B.C. loose slam to Calgary after it having such a rich history from the skate ranch to the plaza?
JH: Stickers. They got banned for too many stickers at the venue. At least that is what I heard. But it could be other stuff, like funding and so forth.
NS: Who do you think are some of the most underrated skaters?
JH: Ted Degros, Sheldon Mweiaski and John White. That is a hard one.
NS: Shout outs? Any humans you would like to thank?
JH: My girl Andr a Marina, for supporting me around the clock and putting up with it. Her family, they're great as well. My family, my mom, my dad, my sister. Gorge and Mickieal Fourkura. Everybody at Powell. Mada, Indy, Project Hardware. The man upstairs. Bones Wheels. Rob Washburn. Raul at Mada to Joe Piccilo, now at TWS was at Mada. GLOBE, Chris Robertson over there. Chet Thomas. Jeremy Fox for helping me get the shot over there. Indy Keith Wilson. Thanks guys for the packages. Joey P. at Project. Erick Bork at Ogio.
NS: How about a shop?
JH: Eric Olsen at Swiss. No shop but I am down, lol. Skate One.
